Computed Tomography
What is a CT scan?
CT scan is a special kind of x-ray that can
produce detailed images of the body by taking pictures
of the
area being scanned in thin layers. It is used to view
soft tissue, bone and blood vessels within the body.
Who should NOT have a CT exam?
If you are pregnant or may be pregnant, consult
your physician prior to the exam.
How should I prepare for my CT exam?
- Please bring previous
x-rays of the area being examined.
- Depending on the type of CT, you may be required
to fast 4-6 hours before the exam.
- Some exams require drinking a liquid contrast agent
up to two hours prior to your exam.
What should I wear for my CT
exam?
Please wear comfortable clothing. If needed,
a dressing gown will be provided.
What should I expect during my
CT exam ?
Depending on the type of exam, you may be
asked to hold your breath and remain still for a few
moments while images are being recorded by the scanner.
You may hear the scanner rotating while the exam table
moves slowly through scanner. Some CT scans require
an injection of a contrast agent that enhances the
clarity of the images. Please tell the technologist
if you have any allergies to food or medicine or have
had an allergic reaction during a previous CT scan
or X-Ray.
