Ultrasound

What is an Ultrasound scan?
This is a scanning method used to obtain images from inside the body through the use of sound waves. The reflected sound wave echoes are recorded and displayed as a visual image. Ultrasound can show movement of internal tissues and organs as well as enable physicians to see blood flow.

How should I prepare for my Ultrasound exam?
- Please bring previous x-rays of the area being examined.
- Depending on the type of ultrasound, you may be required to fast 8 hours before the exam OR drink up to 32 ounces of water one hour prior to your exam and avoid urinating.
- You CAN continue taking medications unless your physician tells you otherwise.

What should I wear for my Ultrasound exam?
Please wear comfortable clothing. If needed, a dressing gown will be provided.

What should I expect during my Ultrasound exam?
You will lie on an examination table. The clinician will spread a clear, warm gel on your body in the area to be examined. A transducer (instrument that creates the sound waves) is pressed against your body, moving it until the desired images are taken.
