Flouroscopy
What is a Fluoroscopy exam?
Fluoroscopy is a form of diagnostic imaging that uses
x-rays, with the aid of a contrast agent to capture a moving
image of an organ while it is functioning. Though still x-ray
images can be useful in examining the colon and rectum, fluoroscopy
is often the most effective way to view the esophagus, stomach
and upper or lower gastrointestinal tract. A contrast material
called barium is used to coat the inside of the esophagus,
stomach, colon or rectum to produce a sharp, well-defined image
of the anatomy in interest.
Who should NOT have a Fluoroscopy exam?
Fluoroscopy is safe for anyone regardless of age or
illness.
How should I prepare for my Fluoroscopy?
Some exams may require you to have nothing to eat
or drink after midnight the night prior, be within 7-10 days
of your menstrual cycle, or take a cleaning prep.
What should I wear for my Fluoroscopy
exam?
You should not wear anything with metal or buttons,
and no jewelry. Gowns will be provided.
